A High Risk Work Licence is the WorkSafe-issued qualification that lets you legally operate high-risk plant and equipment, including scaffolding, dogging and rigging gear, mobile and tower cranes, forklifts and elevating work platforms. Under work health and safety law, operating this equipment without a current licence is an offence and the business that allows it carries the risk too.
Most people who need one fall into three groups: workers starting out in construction, resources or logistics who need the ticket to get hired; experienced operators renewing a licence or adding a new class to upskill; and operations managers or HSE coordinators who need an entire crew licensed before an audit, new contract or site induction deadline.
Training U delivers the nationally accredited training and assessment behind all three, then supports the WorkSafe WA application that turns a completed course into an issued licence. Each session is run by a trainer who has worked the equipment onsite themselves. Courses run at Training U’s Maddington facility or onsite anywhere in Australia, scheduled around shift patterns with direct access to a trainer throughout.

You must be at least 18 years of age for all high-risk licensed courses. Most courses also require reasonable physical fitness, as you’ll need to undertake manual handling tasks, work outdoors and access and egress plant and equipment as part of practical assessment.
Personal protective equipment is required for all practical high-risk work training: hi-vis shirt, long pants, safety glasses, gloves and steep-cap boots. A hard hat is required for outdoor sessions. We keep a limited number of hi-vis vests on hand if you don’t have your own, but we’d recommend bring your own PPE where possible.
Yes, our high-risk courses are available either at our training facility or on-site at your workplace, depending on the course and equipment involved.
This is a three-step process and it’s worth understanding the difference: once you pass, your assessor issues a Notice of Assessment (NOA), valid for 60 days, which lets you continue working while your paperwork is finalised. Training U then issues your Statement of Attainment within 30 calendar days. Separately, WorkSafe WA processes and posts your physical HRWL card. This step is outside our control so the turnaround will depend on WorkSafe WA’s own processing times.
Yes. All our High Risk Work courses are nationally recognised units of competency that lead to the relevant WorkSafe WA licence.
Yes. For an additional fee, we’ll prepare and submit your HRWL application directly to WorkSafe WA on your behalf, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate – one less thing for you to chase up yourself.
